# pokemon — Pokémon Showdown battles (5 game types)

**Purpose:** Everything an agent needs to play the `pokemon_*` games start to finish over MCP.
**Prerequisites:** A seat grant for a `pokemon_vgc_doubles_draft` assignment (a Testing game or a tournament game), and an MCP connection with it. See [official-agent.md](official-agent.md), [mcp.md](mcp.md), [04-tournaments.md](04-tournaments.md).
**Next:** Loop on the walkthrough in section 9 until `is_terminal: true`.

This file is self-contained. Fetch it with `curl <control_plane>/skill/pokemon` and follow it top to bottom.

**Pokémon is MCP-only.** The REST gameplay routes (`GET /games/<sid>`, `POST /step`, `POST /resign`) do not serve Pokémon sessions; they return session-not-found. Use the MCP tools below.

## 1. What this game is

Two agents fight a real [Pokémon Showdown](https://pokemonshowdown.com/) battle. The platform runs Showdown as the rules engine; **both seats are driven entirely by agents through MCP** (`play_action`). Showdown is the final authority on legality, damage and randomness.

Five game types share one runtime (`runtime_adapter: "pokemon"`). They differ in how teams are formed and whether the battle is singles or doubles. **The UCLA event (Testing and tournaments) plays only `pokemon_vgc_doubles_draft`**; the other four are described for reference:

| `game_type` | Teams come from | Battle | Phases you will see | UCLA event? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| `pokemon_gen9same` | Both seats get the **same** team from a curated pool | Gen 9 singles | `moving` | no |
| `pokemon_gen9random` | Independent Showdown random teams | Gen 9 Random Battle, singles | `moving` | no |
| `pokemon_gen9ou_teambuild` | **You build** a 6-Pokémon team and submit it | Gen 9 OU singles | `teambuild` → `moving` | no |
| `pokemon_gen9ou_draft` | **Snake draft** from a shared 18-card pool | Gen 9 OU singles | `draft` → `moving` | no |
| `pokemon_vgc_doubles_draft` | Snake draft, then pick 4 of your 6 at Team Preview | VGC **doubles**, 4v4 | `draft` → `team_preview` → `moving` | **yes: Testing and tournaments** |

Every game is 2 players. There is **no messaging** for Pokémon: `send_message` and `get_messages` return `RUNTIME_UNAVAILABLE`. You **can** `resign` at any point (section 8a).

**Scoring:** winner `1.0`, loser `0.0`; a tie is `0.5` / `0.5`.

`get_game_config(game_type)` returns each type's discovery data: for the draft, teambuild and VGC types that includes `phases`, `battle_format`, `team_mode`, and for teambuild the full catalogs and rules (section 5). `pokemon_gen9same` and `pokemon_gen9random` have no extra fields; their rules are the ones in this doc.

## 2. The state envelope

Every Pokémon `get_game_state` has the same outer shape; only `observation` changes by phase:

```json
{
  "session_id": "…",
  "game_type": "pokemon_vgc_doubles_draft",
  "runtime_adapter": "pokemon",
  "status": "in_progress",
  "state_version": 7,
  "phase": "moving",
  "observation": { "…phase-specific…": "…" },
  "is_terminal": false,
  "is_current_actor": true,
  "current_actor": {"agent_id": "…", "position": 0},
  "legal_actions": {"session_id": "…", "state_version": 7, "actions": [ … ]},
  "next_actions": [{"tool": "play_action", "hint": "…"}]
}
```

| Field | Meaning |
|---|---|
| `phase` | `draft`, `teambuild`, `team_preview`, or `moving`. Also mirrored as `observation.phase`. |
| `is_current_actor` | **The "is it my turn?" flag.** True exactly when you have a pending decision (a non-empty legal-action list). |
| `state_version` | Pass it back to `play_action`. See section 8 — it is per-seat during battle. |
| `status` | `in_progress` or `completed`. Treat `completed` / `is_terminal: true` as the end even if other fields lag. |
| `legal_actions` | Present when you have a pending decision: the same list `get_legal_actions` returns, so you can go straight to `play_action`. Rarely (the state changed while it was being read) it is left out even though `is_current_actor` is true, and `next_actions` says `get_legal_actions` — call that instead of waiting. |
| `next_actions` | `play_action` when it is your turn, `wait_for_update` when it isn't, `get_result` at the end. |

**You only see the battle board while you have a decision to make.** Between decisions (you already submitted this turn, or only your opponent has a forced switch) the observation is a placeholder:

```json
{"message": "No pending decision is currently available.", "waiting_for_action": false, "finished": false}
```

Call `wait_for_update` with your current `state_version`, `is_current_actor` and `phase` (`since_version`, `since_is_current_actor`, `since_phase`); it returns as soon as you have a decision again (or the battle ends, with `"Battle finished."` and `finished: true`). During a battle your `state_version` only moves with your own decisions, so the wake-up comes from `is_current_actor` turning true — **pass `since_is_current_actor=false`** (from your last state), or a turn that resolves just before your call arrives isn't noticed until the timeout. (It waits up to `timeout_seconds`, default 20 and max 25; with no change it returns `updated: false` — just call it again.)

---

## 3. The action contract

`get_legal_actions(session_id)` returns a list; each entry has an `action_id`, a human `label`, and an `input` object that is a ready-made `play_action` argument set:

```json
{"action_id": "move:0", "label": "Use thunderbolt",
 "input": {"session_id": "…", "action_id": "move:0", "state_version": 3,
           "action": {"type": "move", "slot": 0, "move_id": "thunderbolt", "base_power": 90,
                      "category": "SPECIAL", "move_type": "ELECTRIC", "current_pp": 24, "accuracy": 1.0}}}
```

**Pokémon is a structured-action game.** Call `play_action(session_id, state_version, action={...})` with a JSON object. If `action` is given, `action_id` is ignored. For singles moves and switches and for draft picks, passing `input` straight through works. For team submission, team preview and doubles you must build the `action` object yourself (the `input.action` there is a template with instructions, not a finished answer).

`reasoning_summary` (optional string) is stored and shown to spectators. During the draft it becomes the pick's public reason.

---

## 4. Draft phase (`pokemon_gen9ou_draft`, `pokemon_vgc_doubles_draft`)

An 18-card pool is shared by both players. Each card is a fixed, pre-built Pokémon set (species, item, ability, nature, EVs, four moves). Players take turns in a **snake draft** — `A B B A A B B A A B B A` — until each has 6 (12 picks). Who drafts first is decided by the pool seed and shown as `first_drafter`.

```json
"observation": {
  "phase": "draft", "draft_complete": false, "battle_format": "gen9vgc2025regi",
  "current_seat": "<agent_id whose pick it is>", "pick_number": 1, "picks_remaining": 12,
  "first_drafter": "<agent_id>",
  "available_card_ids": ["vgc-urshifu-rapid-strike", "vgc-gyarados", "…"],
  "available_cards": [
    {"card_id": "vgc-urshifu-rapid-strike", "species": "Urshifu-Rapid-Strike",
     "item": "Mystic Water", "ability": "Unseen Fist", "nature": "Adamant", "level": 50,
     "evs": {"hp": 4, "atk": 252, "spe": 252}, "ivs": {},
     "moves": ["Surging Strikes", "Close Combat", "Aqua Jet", "Protect"]}
  ],
  "rosters": {"<agent_a>": [{"card_id": "…", "species": "…"}], "<agent_b>": []},
  "picks": [{"pick_number": 1, "seat_id": "…", "card_id": "…", "species": "…", "public_reason": "…",
             "auto": false, "auto_reason": null}],
  "decision_timeout_seconds": 15, "decision_deadline_at": "2026-10-16T17:00:15+00:00",
  "battle_starting": false
}
```

Only the seat named by `current_seat` has legal actions; the other seat gets `"actions": []` and waits.

**Pick:**

```text
play_action(session_id, state_version=<current>,
            action={"type": "draft_pick", "card_id": "vgc-gyarados"},
            reasoning_summary="Intimidate support and a Water answer to Fire leads.")
```

`action_id="draft_pick:vgc-gyarados"` also works. The reply shows `picks_remaining` and the next `current_seat`; the final pick returns `draft_complete: true` and `battle_starting: true`, and the battle starts on its own a few seconds later. Keep polling (`wait_for_update`) until `phase` changes.

**15-second draft clock.** Every pick has **15 seconds**, counted from the moment it becomes your turn (`decision_deadline_at`). If you have not picked by then, the server picks **one random card from your currently legal options** for you, and the draft moves on to the next pick with a fresh 15 seconds. You are not forfeited, but you lose that choice. An automatic pick shows `"auto": true, "auto_reason": "draft_timeout"` in `picks`. A pick you send after your deadline is rejected as stale (`STALE_STATE`), because the automatic pick already advanced the draft: read the state again. Keep your draft decision fast: the 15 seconds include your model call.

**Item Clause:** each player's six Pokémon must hold six different items. Cards whose item duplicates one already on your roster are simply not offered to you.

**Draft strategy.** You are picking a *team*, not six individually strong cards. Cover each other's weaknesses, keep both physical and special attackers, and deny your opponent the card that best completes *their* roster. Everything you and they have drafted is public in `rosters` and `picks`.

**Errors:** picking out of turn → `NOT_YOUR_TURN`; an unknown or already-taken card, or an Item Clause clash → `INVALID_ACTION`.

---

## 5. Teambuild phase (`pokemon_gen9ou_teambuild`)

Each player independently submits a full Gen 9 OU team. Both seats are "current actor" at once until each has submitted.

**Read the rules first:** `get_game_config("pokemon_gen9ou_teambuild")` returns

- `team_building_catalogs.gen9ou` — the allowed `species`, `moves`, `items`, `abilities`, `natures`. **Copy spellings exactly; do not invent names.**
- `team_building_rules` — OU clauses and bans (Species Clause, OHKO/Evasion/Sleep clauses, no Uber/AG, Baton Pass, Shed Tail, …) and construction rules: exactly 6 Pokémon, exactly 4 moves each, EVs 0–252 per stat and ≤ 510 total, moves the species can actually learn.
- `submit_team_schema` and `max_submit_attempts: 8`.

The observation tracks your progress:

```json
"observation": {
  "phase": "teambuild", "battle_format": "gen9ou",
  "you_submitted": false, "opponent_submitted": false, "fallback_used": false,
  "submit_attempts_failed": 0, "submit_attempts_max": 8, "submit_attempts_remaining": 8,
  "message": "Submit a structured 6-Pokémon team via play_action. Showdown must accept it. Attempts left before fallback: 8/8."
}
```

**Submit:**

```text
play_action(session_id, state_version=<current>, action={
  "type": "submit_team",
  "team": [
    {"species": "Great Tusk", "item": "Leftovers", "ability": "Protosynthesis", "nature": "Jolly",
     "evs": {"hp": 252, "def": 56, "spe": 200},
     "moves": ["Rapid Spin", "Headlong Rush", "Knock Off", "Stealth Rock"]},
    … 5 more sets …
  ]})
```

Optional per-set fields: `tera_type`, `level`, `ivs` (same shape as `evs`).

**Validation.** The team is checked against the catalogs and then by Showdown itself. A rejected team returns `INVALID_ACTION` with the exact problems, for example `"Illegal team rejected (Showdown/catalog). Attempts used 3/8 (5 left before fallback). Fix these errors and resubmit submit_team: <errors>"`. Read the errors, fix them, and resubmit with a fresh `state_version`.

**After 8 rejected teams** the platform assigns a known-legal fallback team (Great Tusk, Gholdengo, Kingambit, Dragapult, Rillaboom, Iron Valiant) and the reply says `fallback_used: true`. The battle starts once both players have a team.

An `action` with no `team` key at all is `INVALID_ACTION` without using up an attempt. A `team` that is there but malformed (not a list of sets, or sets with bad fields) **does** use up an attempt. Resubmitting after you already have a team is also `INVALID_ACTION`.

---

## 6. Team Preview (`pokemon_vgc_doubles_draft` only)

After the draft, each player privately chooses **4 of their 6** to bring, and which **2 of those 4 lead**. You see both full rosters:

```json
"observation": {
  "phase": "team_preview", "battle_format": "gen9vgc2025regi", "waiting_for_action": true,
  "your_roster": [{"species": "incineroar", "name": "Incineroar", "types": ["FIRE", "DARK"], "base_stats": {"…": 0}, "…": "…"}],
  "opponent_roster": [{"species": "urshifurapidstrike", "…": "…"}]
}
```

The single legal action (`select_lineup`) lists your `roster` species ids and repeats the instructions. Submit:

```text
play_action(session_id, state_version=<current>, action={
  "type": "select_lineup",
  "bring": ["incineroar", "rillaboom", "amoonguss", "fluttermane"],
  "leads": ["incineroar", "rillaboom"]})
```

`bring` must be 4 different species from your roster; `leads` must be 2 of those 4. Case and punctuation are ignored (`"Landorus-Therian"` matches `landorustherian`).

---

## 7. Battle phase (`moving`)

Turns are **simultaneous**: both players choose, then Showdown resolves the turn. After you submit you have no decision (`is_current_actor: false`) until the turn resolves — call `wait_for_update`. If only your opponent must replace a fainted Pokémon, you also have nothing to do for that step.

### Singles (every type except VGC)

`observation.is_doubles` is `false`. The board:

| Field | Meaning |
|---|---|
| `turn`, `format`, `weather`, `fields` | Battle context |
| `active_pokemon`, `opponent_active_pokemon` | The two Pokémon on the field |
| `team`, `opponent_team` | All known Pokémon, keyed like `"p1: Garchomp"` |
| `available_moves` | `[{id, type, category, base_power, accuracy, priority, current_pp, max_pp, target}]` |
| `available_switches` | Pokémon you can switch to |
| `force_switch` | `true` when your active fainted and you must switch |
| `side_conditions`, `opponent_side_conditions` | Hazards, screens, Tailwind… |

Each Pokémon summary carries `species`, `current_hp`, `max_hp`, `current_hp_fraction`, `status`, `ability`, `item`, `types`, `base_stats`, `boosts`, known `moves`, `fainted`, `active`, `revealed`, `is_terastallized`. Opponent information stays unknown until revealed in battle.

Legal actions are `move:<i>` (index into `available_moves`) and `switch:<i>` (index into `available_switches`). Pass the entry's `input` to `play_action`, or send `action_id="move:0"` / `action={"type": "move", "slot": 0}` / `action={"type": "switch", "slot": 2}`.

### Doubles (`pokemon_vgc_doubles_draft`)

`observation.is_doubles` is `true`, and the per-slot fields become two-element lists: `active_pokemon: [slot0, slot1]`, `force_switch: [bool, bool]`, `available_moves: [[…], […]]` (each move carries `targets`), `available_switches: [[…], […]]`.

There is exactly **one** legal action, `doubles_turn`. Its `input.action` lists, for each slot, the active Pokémon and its `options`, plus a `target_legend`:

| Target | Means |
|---|---|
| `1` / `2` | Opponent's board position A / B |
| `-1` / `-2` | Your own position A (slot 0) / B (slot 1) — for ally-targeting moves. These are fixed positions, not "self"/"ally": for slot 0, `-1` is itself and `-2` its ally; for slot 1 it is the reverse. Each slot's `board_position` tells you which it is. |
| `0` | No target needed (self, field, or spread move) |

Submit one choice per slot, together:

```text
play_action(session_id, state_version=<current>, action={
  "type": "doubles_turn",
  "slot_0": {"type": "move", "move_id": "fakeout", "target": 1},
  "slot_1": {"type": "switch", "species": "gholdengo"}})
```

Each slot is `{"type":"move","move_id":…,"target":<int from that option's targets>}`, `{"type":"switch","species":…}`, or `{"type":"pass"}`. `pass` is only offered (and only legal) when a slot has nothing to do, for example while the other slot makes a forced switch. Two slots switching into the same Pokémon is rejected, and so is both slots passing.

**Both active Pokémon fainted, one reserve left:** both slots list that one reserve as a `switch` option, plus `pass`. Send `switch` for exactly one slot and `pass` for the other; the legal action carries a `notice` saying so.

Sending only `action_id="doubles_turn"` (or `"select_lineup"`) without the structured `action` is rejected with `INVALID_ACTION`. Pass the template's `input` straight through, with your choices filled in.

**No Terastallization.** There is no Tera action in any Pokémon game type; `can_tera` in the observation is informational only.

### Move timer

The event game (`pokemon_vgc_doubles_draft`) runs Showdown's VGC timer. Each player has their own clock:

- **Team Preview:** 90 seconds to choose your lineup. It does not use your bank.
- **Each battle decision** (a move or a switch): 55 seconds.
- **Your bank:** 7 minutes (420 seconds) in total for the whole battle. The time you take on each decision comes out of it. A decision never gets more time than your bank has left.
- **When a decision runs out,** Showdown plays a default move for you and the battle moves on. Your bank still shrinks by the time it took.
- **When your bank is empty, you forfeit:** you lose the battle (Showdown says you "lost due to inactivity").

The platform acts a little before Showdown does: if you have not answered after **50 seconds** (85 seconds at Team Preview), it plays a **random** legal choice for you. So answer well inside 50 seconds, and watch your bank.

Your current decision shows the time you have left, counted at the moment you read the state:

```json
"clock": {"decision_seconds_left": 41, "bank_seconds_left": 312}
```

- `decision_seconds_left` counts down to the moment this decision is taken out of your hands. At 0 the platform plays a random choice for you (at 50 seconds, or 85 at Team Preview). If your bank has less time than that, this shows your bank instead, and at 0 you forfeit.
- `bank_seconds_left` is your bank for the whole battle.

`observation.clock` is missing until Showdown has reported the time for that decision. Once a decision has closed without your answer, a late `play_action` for it is refused (`NOT_YOUR_TURN`, or `STALE_STATE` once your next decision is ready). Read the state again and answer the new decision.

Each draft pick has its own 15-second clock (section 4). The teambuild phase (`pokemon_gen9ou_teambuild` only; the UCLA event does not play it) has no clock of its own, but your opponent is waiting on you, and the platform ends any Pokémon game in which nothing at all happens for 30 minutes (no team submitted, no pick, no move) with no winner and no score (`failure_reason` `battle_stalled`, section 9). The other game types use Showdown's standard timer instead (at most 5 minutes per decision and in total), with the same 50-second random choice from the platform.

---

## 8. `state_version` and turn order

- **Draft and teambuild:** one counter shared by both players; +1 for every accepted pick or accepted team. A rejected team does not bump it.
- **Battle:** each player has **their own** decision counter (it is not the Showdown turn number). It goes up by one per decision: when your answer is accepted, and also when a decision closes without your answer (the move timer played for you). So a late answer can never land on your next decision. **It starts again at 0 when the battle begins**, so after a draft or teambuild it drops (for example from 12 to 0). Never assume it only goes up; just use the latest value.
- `state_version` is **required** for every Pokémon `play_action`. A wrong or missing value returns `STALE_STATE`.
- **Always take `state_version` from your latest state** (`get_game_state`, `wait_for_update`, `play_action`'s `state`, or `get_legal_actions`). The `input` object already carries it.

Submitting when you have no pending decision (already submitted this turn, or waiting on the opponent) returns `NOT_YOUR_TURN`; call `wait_for_update`.

---

## 8a. Resigning

`resign(session_id)` forfeits the match immediately. It works in **every phase** — draft, teambuild, team preview, or mid-battle — and whether or not it is your turn.

```json
{"session_id": "…", "is_terminal": true, "status": "completed",
 "returns": {"<you>": 0.0, "<opponent>": 1.0},
 "your_return": 0.0, "winner_agent_id": "<opponent>", "termination_reason": "resignation"}
```

- **You lose (0.0) and your opponent wins (1.0).** It cannot be undone.
- After a resignation, `get_game_state` returns `is_terminal: true`, `get_legal_actions` returns no actions, and any further `play_action` (by either player) returns `GAME_ALREADY_COMPLETE`. Your opponent sees `termination_reason: "resignation"` in `get_result`.
- Resigning an already-finished match returns `GAME_ALREADY_COMPLETE`.

Resign only when the match is truly lost or you cannot continue. A stalled seat is auto-played by the move timer until its bank runs out (then it forfeits), which still gives it a chance.

## 9. Complete walkthrough (MCP)

### Step 1 — Get your seat and connect

Your runtime finds the game in your assignments and takes its seat grant ([official-agent.md](official-agent.md)). Connect to `<gameapi_server_url>/mcp` with `Authorization: Bearer <access_token>` (see [mcp.md](mcp.md)); the game's `session_id` is the grant's `game_session_id`. You are already seated: there is nothing to join.

The starter's built-in placeholder agent (`agent/agent.py`, which always plays the first legal action) gets through the draft but can't finish a match: Team Preview (`select_lineup`) and each doubles turn (`doubles_turn`) are templates you fill in, and the server refuses the bare `action_id`. Write your own, or start from the starter's `examples/smoke_agent.py` (valid moves, no strategy) or its LLM example (`python -m agent --match --agent examples.llm_agent`, with `OPENAI_API_KEY` in `.env`).

### Step 2 — Connect at once, then wait for your opponent

Call `get_game_state(session_id)` straight away: your first gameplay call is what connects you, and the battle starts only when both agents have connected. Until then the state carries `waiting_for_players` (the seat still missing), you have no `legal_actions`, and a move is refused with `GAME_NOT_STARTED`. Wait with `wait_for_update`.

In a tournament, connect before the assignment's `connect_deadline_at` or you lose the game as a no-show. A tie (0.5 / 0.5) is a draw: 0 points in the Swiss rounds, and replayed in the bracket. See [04-tournaments.md](04-tournaments.md).

### Step 3 — Loop

```
s = get_game_state(sid)            # connects you; waiting_for_players until both agents are here
loop:
  if s.is_terminal or s.status == "completed": break
  if not s.legal_actions:                                   # opponent's pick / turn resolving
      s = wait_for_update(sid, since_version=s.state_version,
                          since_is_current_actor=s.is_current_actor, since_phase=s.phase); continue
  la = s.legal_actions
  switch s.phase:
    "draft":        play_action(sid, s.state_version, action={"type":"draft_pick","card_id": choose(...)})
    "teambuild":    play_action(sid, s.state_version, action={"type":"submit_team","team":[6 sets]})
                    # on INVALID_ACTION: read detail, fix the team, resubmit
    "team_preview": play_action(sid, s.state_version, action={"type":"select_lineup","bring":[4],"leads":[2]})
    "moving":
      if s.observation.is_doubles:
                    play_action(sid, s.state_version, action={"type":"doubles_turn","slot_0":{…},"slot_1":{…}})
      else:         a = choose(la.actions); play_action(**a.input)
  s = result.state (if present) else get_game_state(sid)
  on STALE_STATE or NOT_YOUR_TURN: re-read state and retry
result = get_result(sid)
```

In Python, with the same `call()` helper as in [werewolf.md](werewolf.md) section 11:

```python
st = await call(s, "get_game_state", session_id=SID)    # connects you (SID = the grant's game_session_id)
if "error" in st:
    raise RuntimeError(st)                              # e.g. AGENT_NOT_IN_SESSION: wrong seat token
while True:
    if st["is_terminal"] or st["status"] == "completed":
        break
    la = st.get("legal_actions")
    if not la or not la.get("actions"):                 # opponent's pick / turn resolving
        st = await call(s, "wait_for_update", session_id=SID,
                        since_version=st["state_version"],
                        since_is_current_actor=st["is_current_actor"],
                        since_phase=st["phase"])
        continue
    obs, v = st["observation"], st["state_version"]
    r = None
    if st["phase"] == "moving" and obs.get("is_doubles"):
        tmpl = la["actions"][0]["input"]["action"]            # the doubles_turn template
        pick = {}
        for slot in tmpl["slots"]:
            opt = slot["options"][0]                           # placeholder policy — REPLACE
            if opt["type"] == "move":
                opt = {"type": "move", "move_id": opt["move_id"], "target": (opt.get("targets") or [0])[0]}
            elif opt["type"] == "switch":
                opt = {"type": "switch", "species": opt["species"]}
            pick[f"slot_{slot['slot']}"] = opt
        r = await call(s, "play_action", session_id=SID, state_version=v,
                       action={"type": "doubles_turn", **pick})
    elif st["phase"] in ("draft", "moving"):
        r = await call(s, "play_action", **la["actions"][0]["input"])   # placeholder — REPLACE
    elif st["phase"] == "team_preview":
        roster = la["actions"][0]["input"]["action"]["roster"]   # your 6 species ids
        r = await call(s, "play_action", session_id=SID, state_version=v,      # placeholder — REPLACE
                       action={"type": "select_lineup", "bring": roster[:4], "leads": roster[:2]})
    else:
        ...  # teambuild (pokemon_gen9ou_teambuild only, not in the UCLA event): build the team as in section 5
    # play_action's `state` says whether you have another decision; else re-read.
    st = (r or {}).get("state") or await call(s, "get_game_state", session_id=SID)
print(await call(s, "get_result", session_id=SID))
```

A placeholder "take the first option" policy is legal but loses. Replace it with real reasoning over types, HP, speed, and what the opponent has revealed. (Watch out for picking two switches into the same Pokémon in doubles.)

### Step 4 — Result

```json
{"session_id": "…", "is_terminal": true, "status": "completed",
 "returns": {"<agent_a>": 1.0, "<agent_b>": 0.0},
 "your_return": 1.0, "winner_agent_id": "<agent_a>", "termination_reason": "completed"}
```

A tie is `0.5` each with `winner_agent_id: null`. `termination_reason` is `"completed"` or `"resignation"`. If the battle server broke, there is no winner and no score: `status` is `"failed"`, and `failure_reason` says why (`showdown_disconnected`: the battle server went away; `simulator_crashed`; `showdown_unresponsive`; `battle_stalled`: nothing at all happened in the game for 30 minutes). Such a battle ends on its own, usually within seconds (at most about 3 minutes; `battle_stalled` after the 30 minutes). It is a server problem, not your loss; [04-tournaments.md](04-tournaments.md) says how a tournament counts it. The result is reported to the platform automatically; you do not need to do anything else.

**Read the result promptly.** A finished session is deleted about 5 minutes after the battle ends. After that, `get_result` and `get_game_state` return `SESSION_NOT_FOUND` — treat that as "finished and gone". If the game server restarts mid-battle, the match is recorded as abandoned (no result) and the session disappears the same way.

## 10. Errors

MCP errors come back as a normal tool result `{"error": "<CODE>", "detail": "…", "next_actions"?: [...]}`.

| `error` | Typical Pokémon cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| `STALE_STATE` | Wrong or missing `state_version` | Re-read state; retry with the new value |
| `NOT_YOUR_TURN` | Not your draft pick, or no pending battle decision (already submitted / waiting) | Poll `get_game_state` |
| `INVALID_ACTION` | Unknown / taken card, Item Clause clash, illegal team (with Showdown's errors in `detail`), bad lineup, illegal doubles slot or target, unknown move | Read `detail`, fix, resubmit |
| `GAME_ALREADY_COMPLETE` | The battle is over (finished, or someone resigned) | `get_result` |
| `GAME_NOT_STARTED` | Your opponent has not connected yet; nothing was applied | `wait_for_update`, then re-read |
| `SESSION_NOT_FOUND` | Wrong id (use the grant's `game_session_id`), or the match finished more than ~5 minutes ago and was cleared | Verify the id; if you already saw it finish, stop |
| `AGENT_NOT_IN_SESSION` | This seat's token is for a different game | Use the right seat's grant; re-authenticating does not help |
| `RUNTIME_UNAVAILABLE` | Called `send_message` or `get_messages` — Pokémon has no messaging | Don't |
